Opis

Gaulterija je rod zimzelenih biljaka iz porodice vrijesovki (Ericaceae). Poznat je po svojim aromatičnim listovima i bobicama, često s karakterističnim mirisom „wintergreena“. To su niski grmovi ili puzajuće biljke čiji su listovi kožasti, zimzeleni, često mirisni kad se zgnječe. Cvjetovi su mali, bijeli ili ružičasti, zvonolikog oblika. Plodovi: okrugle bobice (crvene, bijele ili plave).

Rasprostranjenost

Rod obuhvaća preko 290 vrsta koje rastu u Aziji (Himalaja, Kina, Japan) te Sjevernoj i Južnoj Americi, Australiji i Novom Zelandu [1] Poznatije vrste su Gaultheria procumbens – najpoznatija, koristi se za aromu wintergreena; Gaultheria shallon – važna u floristici i Gaultheria fragrantissima – izvor eteričnog ulja

Upotreba

Eterična ulja: sadrže metil-salicilat (miris sličan mentolu), Tradicionalna medicina: ublažavanje bolova (slično djelovanje kao aspirin).[2] Ukrasne biljke česte su u vrtovima zbog dekorativnih bobica. Iako su neke vrste jestive u malim količinama, metil-salicilat može biti toksičan u većim dozama.
