English: A Roman copper alloy disc brooch with concentric bands of red and black enamel around a central circle. The contents of the centre are missing and it is not clear what would have filled this space. No traces of enamel colour can be detected despite the good preservation of the rest of the design so perhaps a glass or stone 'gem' or intaglio or jet was the focal point of the design. Faint traces of possible silvering can bee seen on the front of the brooch. The back of the object did not appear to be silvered but the catchplate and the pierced lugs for the pin are present. The presence of iron corrosion around the pin fitting suggest that this would have been iron. Two very similar brooches are illustrated by Hattatt (2000 p 344 nos 1027-8) and dated to 2nd century AD.
