Opis
English: Hercules to capture the deer Cerinea (one of the "twelve labors"). As the deer dedicated to Artemis, Hercules he executed orders to capture but not kill her after her bulging pursuit. Bronze fountain, Roman, from Pompeii (House of Sallustio (VI 2, 4)), probably a copy from Lysippus. According to legend, the deer had golden horns and hooves of bronze, so this sculpture that is still enlivened with colored inserts (in the eyes and lips), was probably originally conceived as decorated with further gilding and red copper.
